I have been anxious as long as I can remember. I have always been a worrier, afraid of lots of things, and scared by my anxiety symptoms. When I was 19 years old, I had my first panic attack. Thinking I was having a heart attack, I went to the emergency room, where I was given Xanax and sent home. This happened a few times before an ER doctor told me to make an appointment with my primary physician to get medication. And I did. Having medication helped, partly because I felt safer just having it available. I never liked taking medication and wanted to stop taking it, but I was too scared of having anxiety.
It wasn’t until I was 50 years old that I learned anything about anxiety- why we have it, what is happening in the brain and body, and the different techniques to treat it. It was then that I was able to stop taking medication for anxiety. I still have anxiety and an occasional panic attack, but it no longer scares me. My own experiences of anxiety, panic attacks, and trauma fuel my passion for helping others who experience similar issues. I am confident in the tools and techniques I have to treat anxiety, stress and trauma.
